Some AI news (but not really) and wellbeing resources

Welcome to another edition of Creator Talks. Bit of an AI theme this week (I’ll try not to mention it too frequently in these newsletters if you’re as sick of hearing about it as I am 😅) and then to balance it out nicely a really great bunch of mental health and wellbeing resources.

Grace Beverley launched an AI talent agent for creators and influencers - I won’t lie, I’m very skeptical of AI and while I know it’s not going away, I would prefer a more balanced approach than the constant hype I’m seeing in parts of the creator economy. I would feel very nervous at this stage using an AI talent manager although I can see it being useful if you’re an unrepresented smaller creator. I wonder if Retrograde’s T&Cs would allow you to use it for mass outreach but then give it to your human manager to seal the deal? I also wonder how the brands and agencies feel about negotiating with AI agents (it’s not often I’ll say “how do the brands feel?” 😅) What do you think? Would you use an AI talent manager?

YouTube removing AI slop from monetisation? - but not really. There was a bit of a hoo ha around YouTube announcing that they were updating their monetisation policy to exclude “inauthentic” content and this had two main reactions that I saw: 1) fear and dread from creators who use AI tools to create their content and worrying they would not be able to earn from the YouTube Partner Program anymore and 2) rejoicing from creators thinking this meant that “AI slop” wouldn’t be able to be monetised on YouTube hopefully deterring people and companies from making and flooding the platform with it. I am here to say that the policy has officially been updated now and neither of these things are true. Also, there’s no mention of AI specifically in the policy but their definition of “inauthentic” content could arguably include AI-generated content. The video linked above from vidIQ is a really short and helpful breakdown.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub - this is a new resource created by Patreon and I feel it really goes beyond the usual creator wellbeing stuff around burnout and self-care. For example there are articles on parenthood and creativity, creating through grief, and when you create with your romantic partner (we’ve finally learned from all the break up videos back in the day 😅)

Zubs J Malik

Hi, I’m Zubs — a 40-year-old mum and teacher from London. For over six years, I’ve been sharing my love of books as a content creator on Instagram and TikTok. I’ve just finished the manuscript for my debut novel, and I’m so excited to take this next step on my author journey.
One of the biggest challenges I face is finding meaningful engagement and fair paid opportunities as a book influencer — and this struggle isn’t unique to books, but also extends to film and TV content creators. I’m passionate about making these creative spaces more accessible and equitable for all voices

Well well well, another day another lesson learned. Welcome to Creator Talks where I share the business behind the scenes of being a creator with you. This newsletter edition is a doozy. A ridiculous story where if I think of the missed opportunity too much I might actually cry. But first some backstory. In 2024, when I started this arm of my business working with content creators I knew I needed an email list. So I started one with a free lead magnet of a social media content calendar Notion...

This is not the newsletter I was expecting to write for you but holy shit balls my Patreon has recently experienced massive growth. I want to share this win with you and celebrate but of course also turn it into a teachable moment because you know I love nerding out about Patreon strategy. Okay so, what happened? I made in a YouTube video about how I organise and plan my work life using the “12 Week Year” method and in that video mentioned that I was going to be reducing my video uploads and...

Happy New Year folks! I didn’t get out an edition of this newsletter at the end of the last year because I was knee deep in what I call “Vlognukah” (8 pre-filmed videos for the 8 days of Chanukah), my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who attempted vlogmas because jesus christ I don’t know how people do it. Also with a new year I like trying new things so this is something different than usual. Instead of three newsy things happening in the creator economy you’re getting my musings on a...
