The Endless Hell of YouTube Tutorials

Welcome to another addition of Creator Talks! Here’s three things I think are worth your attention 😊

The Endless Hell of YouTube Tutorials - If you are a YouTube creator then for your own sanity you need to watch this video, bookmark it somewhere and every so often come back to it when required. The video is not only an incredible feat of editing but an excellent reminder when you get stuck watching endless YouTube tutorials and strategy videos… just me? Watch it. Cleanse your soul (and your feed).

Free tickets to CreatorFest - FiveTwoNine are awarding 10 creators tickets to CreatorFest Europe. I would recommend applying/going if you can! I’ll be there this year interviewing Millie Gooch, founder of Sober Girl Society, all about owning and managing your community. Let me know if you’re going!

CreatorFest is on 23rd October and the deadline to apply for the free tickets is 24th September.

Patreon’s New Discovery Features - it’s just the beginning but Patreon are investing A LOT at the moment in new features on the platform. I currently have access to “Quips” (think Twitter, Substack Notes) and I find them so useful for sharing the more casual things that don’t require a full Patreon post that emails all my followers. And there is a new collaboration feature where you can share posts with other creators. These features aren’t available to everyone yet but I wanted to share as I know a lot of creators are struggling with other social media apps and I’m feeling tentatively very hopeful about doing more on Patreon - a platform I feel more aligned with in terms of values and of course it’s directly tied to where I make money. Handy.

I guess you might call me an OG? I started a blog in 2008 called ‘I want you to know’ and I’ve gone from being a fashion design student to a full time influencer who’s worked with Marriott, Gousto and Beauty Pie. Name any brand and I’ve probably had a connection with them somehow.
At the moment my content is about navigating the thirtysomething journey through fashion, lifestyle and travel. It’s great because you know more about yourself but there’s also things like dating, motherhood, perimenopause and hopefully buying property on the horizon. I like to say that I’m in my messy vulnerable era. My content is quite personal and I've had a tricky few years dealing with bereavement and having some fibroids removed.
At the moment I’m working on hosting a group trip to Jamaica and trying to futureproof my career. I have a lot of experience from the perspective of being the influencer, so I’d love to use this knowledge to help brands understand us better. For example ‘ASAP’ is not a deadline and can lead to creators burning out. It doesn’t seem fair that a brand can take 10 days to approve a concept but want the content delivered in three days over a weekend.
My biggest challenge is probably cashflow. I’d also love to launch a podcast about the older millennial’ experience, so I’d like to find a way to get funding for that.

Well well well, another day another lesson learned. Welcome to Creator Talks where I share the business behind the scenes of being a creator with you. This newsletter edition is a doozy. A ridiculous story where if I think of the missed opportunity too much I might actually cry. But first some backstory. In 2024, when I started this arm of my business working with content creators I knew I needed an email list. So I started one with a free lead magnet of a social media content calendar Notion...

This is not the newsletter I was expecting to write for you but holy shit balls my Patreon has recently experienced massive growth. I want to share this win with you and celebrate but of course also turn it into a teachable moment because you know I love nerding out about Patreon strategy. Okay so, what happened? I made in a YouTube video about how I organise and plan my work life using the “12 Week Year” method and in that video mentioned that I was going to be reducing my video uploads and...

Happy New Year folks! I didn’t get out an edition of this newsletter at the end of the last year because I was knee deep in what I call “Vlognukah” (8 pre-filmed videos for the 8 days of Chanukah), my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who attempted vlogmas because jesus christ I don’t know how people do it. Also with a new year I like trying new things so this is something different than usual. Instead of three newsy things happening in the creator economy you’re getting my musings on a...
