What even is a podcast anymore?

Welcome to Creator Talks, the newsletter for ambitious and overwhelmed creators.

I’m taking a break from shamelessly trying to get an invite to the Wicked: For Good London premiere to bring you this edition of Creator Talks! Here’s three things worth knowing about in the creator world right now.

Is this new podcast hosting platform too good to be true? With Spotify and YouTube both trying to corner the market of video podcasts the lines between what is a podcast and what is just a long form video with microphones are blurring. Anyway, if you are in the video podcast game then I think it’s worth checking out Steven Bartlett’s new video podcast hosting platform Flightcast. You upload your video podcast in one place and it feeds it out to Spotify and YouTube and of course sends the audio to all the podcast listening platforms. Pretty fucking cool. There’s some other AI stuff too. And it is quite expensive.

AI & Creator Burnout - London Event! This was meant to happen last month but then… tube strikes. But it’s now happening next week (Tuesday 11th November)! I’m speaking at it about creator burnout and it’s being hosted by the DCA (Digital Creators Association). I’m really looking forward to hearing people’s thoughts on AI in the creator economy because it feels like I can’t escape it and I would like to escape it.

Substack vs Patreon??? Lots of newsletter writers have been jumping ship from Substack to Patreon recently. I’m finding this fascinating! This has a lot to do with the founders of Substack refusing to draw a line about platforming hate speech and Patreon building out their newsletter features. Most notably of the Substacks that I follow, Anne Helen Petersen’s Culture Study has moved over to Patreon. That being said, Substack have a free workshop for creators at FiveTwoNine on 20th November. If you are thinking about starting a newsletter I think a lot of the principles they will teach will apply no matter which platform you choose whether that is Substack, Patreon, or something different entirely like Ghost.

Aubrey Aust

Hi! My name is Aubrey Aust and I’m a researcher and MA candidate at NYU studying relational psychology and philosophy. I create content around the psychology and philosophy of self and human connection and dive into everything from attachment theory to how we psychologically construct our identity.

I’m just getting started and feel pretty overwhelmed at the online world. I am trying to learn how to organically build community and engagement but it’s tough! Everything feels super saturated and I’m definitely still finding my place.

Grateful to connect with you all!

Well well well, another day another lesson learned. Welcome to Creator Talks where I share the business behind the scenes of being a creator with you. This newsletter edition is a doozy. A ridiculous story where if I think of the missed opportunity too much I might actually cry. But first some backstory. In 2024, when I started this arm of my business working with content creators I knew I needed an email list. So I started one with a free lead magnet of a social media content calendar Notion...

This is not the newsletter I was expecting to write for you but holy shit balls my Patreon has recently experienced massive growth. I want to share this win with you and celebrate but of course also turn it into a teachable moment because you know I love nerding out about Patreon strategy. Okay so, what happened? I made in a YouTube video about how I organise and plan my work life using the “12 Week Year” method and in that video mentioned that I was going to be reducing my video uploads and...

Happy New Year folks! I didn’t get out an edition of this newsletter at the end of the last year because I was knee deep in what I call “Vlognukah” (8 pre-filmed videos for the 8 days of Chanukah), my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who attempted vlogmas because jesus christ I don’t know how people do it. Also with a new year I like trying new things so this is something different than usual. Instead of three newsy things happening in the creator economy you’re getting my musings on a...
